Composer
Paul Essek
Paul Essek was a German-Swiss composer and violist. Son of a musician and actor family he studied in Liege and Berlin and became a Swiss citizen in 1898. From 1903 until his death he was a member of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and served as its principal viola. As a member of the Zurich String Quartet, whose work he devoted more than thirty years, he took an important place in Zurich's musical life. Performances with the ensemble in many European countries provided him great recognition. From 1904 on, he was also teaching at the Conservatory. Esseks descendants now living as a musician in South Africa and Germany.
Essek is known as a composer for his Etudes for Violin and concert pieces for violin and piano accompaniment. Less well known today are his cradle and lullabies, as well as the collection from his childhood and the little Christmas fantasy. The Concerto in G major for violin and piano from 1911 is still a popular study piece for beginners. Many of his compositions he wrote for his children, colleagues and students. His friend composer Othmar Schoeck devoted to him and his colleagues of the Zurich String Quartet his String Quartet in C Major (Op. 37).
