About this item
‘Sea Shells’ in 1994 was composed in
command of the Oegstgeest Youth Symphony Orchestra. It was written
specifically for the Junior orchestra, therefore very well playable by
amateur orchestras. The Harp solo part is very interesting but not very
demanding and therefore very well playable for advanced students. Although the command was ‘A piece for harp and Orchestra’, the harp and orchestra have an equivalent part. ‘Sea Shells’ consists of 3 movements; 1) early morning, 2) daytime and 3) dawn Shells are used in the percussion in different ways. 1st mvt. Little shells in a container are to be stirred. 2nd mvt. Two large hollow shells are beaten against each other. From bar 63 bunches of little shells are shuffled, even so in the 3rd mvt. The sound of the waves can be produced with hands in a waterfilled container, or an electronic device can be used. |

Composer
Rita Hijmans
Rita Hijmans was raised in a musical family and taught to play oboe, flute and piano. After completing secondary school she went on to study theory of education at Utrecht University.
Her enthusiasm for and dedication to ‘Dutch’ cabaret developed while at secondary school. At university she joined a cabaret group, called Patati Patata, for which she composed and aranged music. Together with this group, which in its heyday won a third prize at the Camaretten cabaret festival, she produced a record and subsequently made appearance in a television cabaret special. She participated in a mime and musical improvisations project led by a well-known mime artist, Rob van Reijn, and spent a year in the USA where she played the flute as a member of a Big Band.
Later in life she decided to return to her ‘roots’ and study music. She received training from several before focusing on composition. Daan Manneke and Burkhardt Söll were her teachers.
She composes for ensembles and orchestras varying in composition, size and performance level: works for youth orchestra, string orchestra, wind ensemble, wind quintet, string quartet, violin and piano, cello and piano, as well as setting poems to music, both for chorus and solo voice with instrumental accompaniment by bass clarinet and marimba."
