A Walk in the Park

Composer
Ayumi Okada

A native of Kyoto Japan, composer Ayumi Okada began piano studies at age five and composition at age seven. She received her BA and MA in Music Education from Kyoto University of Education and studied composition under the tutelage of Hiroyuki Osawa. During her university years, her compositions were performed in a number of settings. Upon graduating, Ms. Okada spent a year teaching at Kyoto Goshominami Elementary School in Kyoto, Japan. Equally interested in education and composition, she stayed active as a composer while working as a teacher. After she came to NY, USA, Ayumi Okada was trained at Mannes College of Music, where she received her MM in Composition under the tutelage of David Loeb. During her years at Manness, she has won four composition awards including, first prize in Jean Schneider Goberman Competition (2010) ; her piece, Piano Trio No. 1, was premiered at Carnegie Hall by Alaria Trio in April, 2010, Mannes Orchestra Competition (2010) ; her piece, "Deja-vu",was performed by the Mannes Orchestra under the direction of David Hayes at Composer's Concert in December, 2010, CIRCE competition (2011) ; she was commissioned to write a piece, and the piece, "Before Dawn", was premiered at Mannes College in May, 2011, and MartinůComposition Award (2011) ; which is given to a composition major at Mannes College demonstrating skill and originality in musical composition. Ms.Okada is now actively composing in New York, and her compositional catalog includes vocal works and instrumental works of which the various instrumentation settings range from solo pieces to a full orchestral piece. Two of her chamber music, "A Walk in the Park for Clarinet & Piano" and "In the Ancient Forest for Cello" were published through Abundant Silence Publishing in its Performance Series in March 2013. Along with enhancing her catalog, she is also eager to work more as a copyist, arranger, and orchestrator.
