Stephen Sondheim is a composer of many musical shows. He first became known, however, as a lyricist writing the words for some of the songs in Leonard Bernstein's "Candide" in 1956 and then for "West Side Story"the following year. He then took to writing words AND music and in 1973 this beautiful ballad, "Send in the Clowns" taken from his show "A Little Night Music", became an international hit.
