Composer
Frank Hruby (1918-2012)
Frank Hruby was born into a prominent musical family that performed and taught music for three generations. He was 5 when his father bought him his first clarinet.
Hruby was head of the music and fine arts department of University School for 27 years, and music critic and arts columnist for the Cleveland Press from 1956 until it closed in 1982. He was still composing, using a computer and musical notation software, in the final weeks of his life at age 93.
He died on Sunday at University Hospitals in Cleveland after a short illness.
A graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with degrees in music theory and composition and piano, he entered the Navy immediately after earning his master's. He served three years as damage control officer aboard a destroyer-minesweeper during World War II, escorting convoys across the North Atlantic and protecting amphibious landings in the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima.
He taught at Mississippi Southern College for two years after the war, then returned to Cleveland. Besides teaching and practicing journalism, he served for a decade as music director and conductor at Cain Park Summer Theater, and as conductor of the all-male Singers' Club of Cleveland.
He and his wife, Pollee, were married for 62 years. He returned to composing in her memory after she died in 2007.
