About this item
It seems
uncertain whether this beautiful song first sprang from Scotland or
Ulster. The words are about love and going out on the hills - and
therefore, behind all that, the heart's longing for loveliness, deep
fulfilment and the non-humdrum.
The very best result will be had with the forces specified in the
conductor's score; that is to say, string orchestra with two
independent cello sections (with enough players for satisfactory balance
with other parts) plus double bass. The double bass part may, however,
be left out, and violin 3 may, as an acceptable makeshift, either
double or even replace the viola. The leader should play her or hissolo
with sweetness but refinement; cello 1's harmonics, which are not hard
but need practice, should be made audible by observing (but not
overdoing) the accents.
Instrumentation
Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola (or Violin 3) Cello 1, Cello 2, Double Bass
