About this item

The parts are cued so that this arrangement can be played by strings only or strings and piano with any available wind and percussion. If there are comparatively few lower strings the piano part will be useful in strengthening these. It may also provide a contrasting colour when the orchestra consists mainly of strings. When two oboe players are present the oboe part may well be split so that the principal player performs the more exposed passages. Within the Goodmusic Concert Classics series there are five packs which contain various movements from this suite. By combining these together it is possible to create a substantial suite of pieces lasting over 20 minutes in total.

A suggested sequence of pieces is:-
1. Promenade 1 (from GMCL011)
2. The Gnome (from GMCL011)
3. Promenade 2 (from GMCL018)
4. The Old Castle (GMCL017)
5. Promenade 3 (from GMCL018)
6. Bydlo (from GMCL018)
7. Catacombs (from GMCL062)
8. Promenade 4 (from GMCL062)
9. The Great Gate of Kiev (GMCL005)

Composer
Modest Mussorgsky (1839 - 1881)

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (21 March 1839 – 28 March 1881) was a Russian composer, one of the group known as 'The Five'. He was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, Russian folklore, and other nationalist themes. Such works include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain, and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. For many years Mussorgsky's works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers. Many of his most important compositions have recently come into their own in their original forms, and some of the original scores are now also available.
