About this item
Full orchestra Chester was a popular marching song during the American Revolution. This grade 2 arrangement for your orchestra by John Lloyd, recalls the life and spirit in early America.
The Ostinato snare drum gives the principal percussionist an opportunity to be a soloist. The woodwinds and strings "sing" the hymn tune, with the melody appearing in the tenor voice (2nd clarinet, basson, horn and viola). Then, the tempo quickens and "Chester" appears as a marching tune, bright and spirited, just the way it was sung by the soldiers of the American Revolution.

Composer
William Billings (1746-1800)
William Billings (b. Boston, October 7, 1746 – d. Boston, September 26, 1800) was an American choral composer, and is widely regarded as the father of American choral music. Originally a tanner by trade, and lacking formal training in music, Billings created what is now recognized as a uniquely American style.
"He had one eye, a deformed arm and a harsh voice; he was lame in one leg; and he was addicted to snuff." At the age of 14 his father's death stopped his formal schooling. He was married with six children. Billings died in poverty on September 26, 1800.
