About this item
Hardly any other music reaches children's ears as early as Peter and the Wolf. It is indeed a treat to listen to Peter walking carefree, the little bird singing gaily, the duck quacking, the cat creeping, the grandfather exercising his authority and the hunters shooting in lockstep passed the wolf ! It is even more fun, of course, to play this music and at the end to escort the wolf fortissimo into the zoo.
The new arrangement organizes the music into eight manageable sections. Although very close to the original, it is far easier to play. The second and third violin (or viola) stay in the first position for the entire piece. The 1st violin occasionally shifts to the 3rd position; the cello up to the 5th position. A second cello can replace the double bass.
Six winds ideally support the strings: Flute (the little bird), oboe (the duck), clarinet (the cat), trumpet (the hunters), French horn (the wolf) and bassoon (the grandfather). Varying and smaller casts are possible. Only the flute, which is easily played by students, is absolutely required. A piano part supports the solo winds and strengthens the harmonic and rhythmic base. The rhythm section with timpani, bass drum, snare drums, tambourine and cymbals expands the sound spectrum.
The music of Prokofiev is melodically and harmonically easy to understand. At the same time it provides entrance to an extended tonality, whereat clean tuning is most important. Because of this the opus is also exceedingly valuable in respect of musical education.
