After college, Thom taught briefly in the public school system in Ohio and then made his move to California. He studied composition and arranging at the acclaimed Grove School of Music before launching his career as a professional composer, arranger, and orchestrator.
Thom has written for the New Christy Minstrels, Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Harry Connick Jr. and others. His television and film credits are extensive. He wrote the music for Ping and orchestrated on the movies When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers.
