About this item
This piece,
along with its two companion pieces ("Alone in the Hills" and "Waltz for
Gentle Giants"), is scored for strings with two cello parts. It may
either be played as a string-orchestra item or as a chamber item for
string quintet. When played with string orchestra the ideal state of
affairs is the presence of double bass(es), enough cellos to allow both
cello parts to balance the higher parts well, and a satisfactory viola
section. The double bass part, however, may be left out and the violin 3
part (inevitably a bit of a makeshift but perfectly acceptable) may
either double or even replace the viola. For chamber use, with one
player to a part, violin 3 could replace viola and the double bass part
might even be added to good effect if played with tact.
It is hoped that these pieces may be especially suitable for string
orchestras where the cello section is quite well-stocked and for
double-cello quintets for whom Boccherini's Grampians are daunting and
Schubert's Everest still only a dream . . . . . .
Instrumentation
Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola (or Violin 3) Cello 1, Cello 2, Double Bass [optional]
