Fred M. Hubbell (1924-2007)

Born: March 9, 1924 Death: April 28, 2007 Born in Rockford, Illinois, he began studying clarinet in fifth grade under the tutelage of his father, Roy, who was a school band and orchestra director in several small communities in the Rockford area. After high school Fred enrolled at the University of Illinois School of Music, where he studied composition with Alvin Etler and Burrill Phillips. There he was awarded two degrees in Clarinet Performance and Composition. Fred’s first teaching position was in the Mount Carroll (IL) Public Schools. Six years later he began a 24-year tenure at the schools in Park Ridge (IL), serving as Coordinator of Instrumental Music and conducting both band and orchestra in grades 4-8. In 1988 he was installed in the Illinois Chapter of Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Hall of Fame, and in 1998 he received the Star of Excellence Award from the Mendelssohn Club of Rockford for his lifetime service and music contributions.
