About this item
The Irish Suite for Harp solo and string
orchestra was written at the end of the 1980’s for th Cuypers Ensemble, a
youth orchestra based in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
The first movement draws its inspiration from the music played in British
aristocratic circles. It is a line dance in which two pairs of
dancersimprovise a good examlple. The second movement is a melancholic Irish
song similar to what can be heard in pubs today. The third movement depicts a
happy evening in the pub where vistors dance jigs and reels.
The harp solo part can be played on the Celtic, Non-pedal or Pedal Harp,
while the Piano reduction can also be played on a second harp.

Composer
Nico Brandon
"After his violin study with Jaap Schroder, Nico Brandon entered service with the radio in the broadcasting Orchestra. He played in the Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra, also as a soloist. He worked among others with French Bridges, ans Ton Koopman. He is specialized the Dutch Baroque trio sonatas and made many radio and TV recordings.
As a composer Nico started to write for strings ensembles around. He wrote many works for harp, but also a large symphonic work for the Radio Chamber Orchestra
His compositions are usually inspired by folk music from Europe. This music, cradle of many great composers, is fun to play, but too little known. Nico thinks it is important to get to know this music, to approach the play style and even the occasional dance to learn. Like Dvorak, Smetana and Bartok who made intensive study of traditional music and dances, Nico likes to be inspired by European baroque style dances like Bourree, Branle, Tambourin, Gigue etc.
Nico is artistic director of the Purcell Chamber Orchestra. He has occasionally composed new work for this Baroque oriented ensemble.
The degree of difficulty of his works may vary from very simple eg, youth ensembles, to professional level.
