Composer
William Pordon
Born in Buffalo, New York on August 4, 1925 to the late William P. and Victoria (Valenches) Pordon. During World War II, he served as a Private First Class in the U. S. Army, serving in Italy in the 363rd Infantry Regiment as a radio operator.
Mr. Pordon graduated from the Chicago Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree, and subsequently a graduate degree in Music Composition.
He was a violinist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from 1951 to 1955. He then moved into Music Education, becoming Director of Music in Wayland public schools, and Associate Professor of Music at UMass Lowell from 1969 until his retirement in 1985.
As a string clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor, he appeared at many music festivals and competitions in New England and California. Mr. Pordon was the author of numerous articles on string education, and was awarded the Lowell Mason Award by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association in 1981. He was a past president of the Massachusetts String Teachers Association, and the American String Teachers Association (South California Chapter), as well as a Lifetime Member of Local #325 Musicians Union. A published arranger and composer, he enjoyed not only composing original string pieces, but also arranging jazz classics for string quartets and student orchestras.
Following his retirement, he moved to San Diego, California where he was a member of a string quartet and taught strings privately, continuing to inspire others through music. In 2003, at the age of 77, he helped found the Point Loma University String Project, a lab school for string majors learning to teach strings to children. He continued to actively teach privately until last fall, delighting in the energy of his young students and engaging them with humor and empathy.
